The Thinking Behind Our Work
There is an idea called Bridging Social Capital. It says that making connections between groups of people – who already do things together – brings big benefits to young people, other individuals, communities, regions and even countries.
Recent evidence says that societies with high social capital and lots of inter-connected networks are happier and more stable, have less crime and achieve more
The idea of Bridging Social Capital helps us to shape our activities and services with young people.
Much of what we do involves creating opportunities that bring together young people, youth groups and their communities – consciously creating diversity to connect at loacl, regional, European and world levels.
Social Capital
Social Capital is about trust, mutually beneficial co-operation and community and civic engagement.
Some communities have strong Bonded Social Capital.
This refers to networks, co-operation and self-reliance within the community.
Communities with strong bonded social capital are often well-placed to become involved with Bridging Social Capital. This is all about establishing mutually beneficial co-operation, trust and reciprocity between groups and communities.
Bridging Social Capital flows from Bonded Social Capital.
